Local Vermont Restaurants

The picturesque little town of Rochester is just 10 minutes away from the green home in Granville. And though Rochester may be small, it boasts four terrific local restaurants.

There’s the Rochester Cafe with its hearty breakfast and sandwich menu, and its soda fountain where poet Robert Frost used to sip milkshakes. There’s also Seasoned Books and Bakery, serving some of the finest organic local fare you’ll find in Vermont. Browse the incredible book selection (specializing in sustainability, renewable energy and homesteading) while you eat. Also enjoy local musical talent, or hear a poetry reading or attend a book signing there. In fact, proprietors Sandy and Larry live off-grid just a stone’s throw from the Granville green home!

The Porch in Rochester offers a pub-like setting with gourmet offerings and is a great evening hangout. Be sure to sample the full range of local brews. The Huntington House Inn, Restaurant and Tavern offers a cozy “Cheers”-like bar, plus fine dining. Located on the town’s historic green (scene to seasonal concerts and festivals) the Huntington House chef cooks up a variety of signature dishes. There’s also an excellent wine list.

Beyond Rochester, you’ll find lovely breakfast, lunch and dinner offerings up and down Route 100, ranging from the famous wood-fired earthen oven pizza of American Flatbread in Warren, to the seventeen restaurants in Sugarbush Village.  And don’t forget the Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory, further up Route 100 in Waterbury, Vermont.

Local Vermont Food

You’ll also find excellent hunting and gathering all up and down Route 100, at summertime vegetable stands, and at places like the Sunshine Valley Berry Farm, ten acres of pic-your-own and pre-picked organic raspberries, blueberries, blackberries and cherries; or at Mom and Pop’s Maple Syrup Company (the best maple syrup in Vermont!).

There’s also Sweet Pea Natural Foods, just 25 minutes away from the Granville Green home in Waitsfield. And even the Macs Valley Market in Rochester, just 10 minutes away, has a whole aisle devoted to organic and natural foods. In summertime, local growers hold a farmers market on the park in Rochester and in Waitsfield.
