The lively arts at their local best

It might seem surprising, but just a short scenic drive from the Granville earth-friendly-home, you’ll discover an extraordinary arts scene, with art galleries, concert spaces, and music and craft festivals. Here’s a small sampling:

Art Galleries and Studios

Just five minutes from the Granville property is the studio of famed Vermont Glassblower Michael Egan, who daily invites visitors to watch him create exquisite art objects in glass. Ten minutes away in Rochester is BigTown Gallery, known for its rotating year round art exhibits and for special music and entertainment events, such as Vermont’s famous Bread and Puppets Theatre Troupe. BigTown’s weeklong BigTent festival celebrates its second year anniversary in 2010. Also in Rochester, see J. Jensen’s Clay Studio, and Boysenberry, a fleece clothing boutique. More galleries and artist studios pepper Route 100, and the nearby hill roads.

Waitsfield and Warren feature numerous galleries including the Artisans’ Gallery, (featuring the work of more than 200 Vermont artists), the Parade Gallery, Ruth Pope Gallery, and Warren Village Pottery.

Theatre

Looking to watch – or even take a role – in local theatre? Rochester, Vermont, boasts the White River Valley Players that not only puts on several full-scale plays yearly, but also hosts the fabulous and fun Harvest Fair and SummerNight Festival held annually in Rochester Park.

Just to the north of Granville is Waitsfield, home to the Mad River Valley Players, another renowned community theatre troupe, celebrating its 30th year in 2010, and annual host to Mad River Unplugged, a folk and blues music series. You’ll also want to check out the Mad River Valley Craft Fair each Labor Day weekend.

Music

The Earth-friendly-home in Granville is located within minutes of a thriving music scene. No matter your tastes, you’ll find sounds to your liking nearby.

Each summer the Rochester Chamber Music Society brings world-class musicians to the little community’s nineteenth century Federated Church. The RCMS also sponsors the extraordinary Green Mountain Suzuki Institute, a weeklong musical learning experience for talented young classical musicians held each summer. Rochester also holds a summer-long Music in the Park concert series, and you’ll find regular jazz and folk music events at Seasoned Books and Bakery.

You’ll discover many more music venues and events in Warren, Waitsfield, and at the Sugarbush and Killington, Four Season Resorts. Music plays a leading part in the Mad River Valley Craft Fair. Also check out the pop, jazz and classical offerings of the Bundy Center for the Arts in Waitsfield, Vermont.

Also nearby in Randolph, Vermont, is the Chandler Center for the Arts which features world-class musicians from all genres year round. Randolph also closes its main street each summer for a two day Celtic music festival.

Close by too is Middlebury which lays claim to Middlebury College with its unsurpassed Performing Arts Series, with concerts, dance, theatre, and one of the best art museums in the state.
